About Me

Promising painter, playwright, and director Nazmul Haque Bappy was born in Dhaka and grew up in Mohanganj, Netrokona. Completing his BFA and MFA from the Department of Oriental Art, Faculty of Fine Art, University of Dhaka, Bappy, inspired by his parents – Dr. Md Nurul Haque and Rasheda Khatun Chowdhury – later obtained a higher degree in Chinese painting through a fully funded scholarship from the Chinese government.

Bappy’s paintings are deeply inspired by nature. While his initial works were rooted in the traditional Oriental style, he has expanded his creative approach over time, experimenting with diverse styles and media. “I constantly try to go beyond the limitations of Oriental works and explore new trends in my art,” said Bappy. He transitions between watercolour, acrylic, oil, Chinese ink, and mixed media while staying true to the essence of the Oriental style of Bangladesh, blending it with modern elements.

The artist has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Bangladesh and internationally. To date, he has held eleven solo exhibitions, including his most recent, The Eternal Journey-3 at the Barking & Dagenham Liberty Gallery, London, United Kingdom, in 2023. He has also participated in and organized significant group exhibitions, such as 84e Salon des Artistes Indépendants Normands in Rouen, France, 2024, and Whispers of Colour at Tobian Art Gallery, Florence, Italy, in 2024.

Bappy is not only a prolific artist but also a skilled educator and mentor. He has conducted many workshops, including a Chinese painting workshop as a trainer at the Paul Mascart School of Painting in Rouen, France, in April 2024.

His contributions to the art world have been widely recognized, earning him numerous awards, including the Best Award in the Department of Oriental Art at the Annual Art Exhibition in 2008 and 2011, the Berger Paints Award, the UNAIDS Grand Award, the China-Bangladesh Friendship Award, and the Grand Award at the International Korean Art Festival. Most recently, he was honored with the SM Sultan Foundation Award 2023 at the International Art Exhibition, Sultan Fair 2023.

Apart from his achievements in visual art, Bappy is also a celebrated playwright and director. Since starting with the TV play Osomapto in 2014, he has written and directed several popular productions, including Akash Meghe Dhaka, Bokarai Preme Pore, Tomay Niye, Bhalobashi Aajo, and Opekkha.

Currently, he balances his passion for painting and TV drama production while serving as an Assistant Professor at the University of Development Alternative (UODA). With plans to direct a film next year, Bappy continues to push boundaries and inspire through his creativity.
